Hans Wegner Round Chair
Hans Wegner was a successful Danish furniture designer who contributed to the international popularity of mid-century Danish design. His work belongs to a modernist school with emphasis on functionality. He is probably best known for his chairs. He worked as an assistant to Erik Møller and Arne Jacobsen until 1943, and then opened his own office. Interiors magazine, in America, put the Round chair on the cover in 1950 and called it ‘the world’s most beautiful chair,’ catapulting Wegner into international fame and sparking a profitable export market. It became known simply as,The Chair. Each Round Chair (1949) is worked on by at least five craftspeople, takes almost 12 hours to complete, and costs about $4,000. Just look at that woodwork.
